Sadly, Americans have pretty poor health for such a developed nation. Did you know that chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes cause 70% of deaths each year in America? The worst part is, these diseases are mostly preventable through healthy habits and good nutrition. Why are we satisfied with this? Why do we not more often analyze the connection between diet and health?
Don’t Americans ever wonder why two thirds of our deaths are caused by preventable diseases while we are one of the richest nations in the world? The American healthcare system is nowhere near inadequate enough to explain the state of our country’s poor health. We have great sanitation, a clean drinking supply, accessible medication, no major epidemics, and plenty of food for each person. In theory, we should be one of the healthiest nations in the world. So why aren’t we?
The answer must lie in the American diet and eating habits. What are we eating? Where is it coming from? How is it produced? How far does it travel before reaching our tummies? Even, who are we eating with, and where, why, and how fast? These questions are important, but not often enough considered. I think the key to our health is making active efforts to learn about nutrition and the things we put into our bodies, and then actually living by what we’ve learned.
Wouldn’t you trade some artificial flavorings and chemical sweeteners and pesticide-laden vegetables to live a longer, healthier, happier life? At the end of the day, these small choices might in fact make all the difference…

Since the beginning of the superfood craze, we have scoured the earth for most nutritious, most delicious: the best of the best superfoods. These next few superfruits have some of the highest levels of antioxidants of all the superfoods and phytochemicals you can’t find elsewhere. If you want an insider look at what’s coming up in superfood trends, take a look at these next three.
Maqui Berry: Naturally grown in Patagonia region of Chile, the maqui berry has some of the highest antioxidant levels of any food. Also known as the Chilean wineberry, has been featured on the Rachael Ray Show, Fox News and CNN as one of the world’s most nutritious superfruits. It has an ORAC-H (antioxidant) value of 27,000 which is DOUBLE that of Acai, TRIPLE that of Pomegranate, and FIVE TIMES that of Blueberries! It is delicious and is most popular in anti-aging supplements and skin care products.
Blackcurrant: This beautiful berry grows in sunny, high altitude areas with hot summers and freezing cold winters. The fruits are anywhere from greenish-black to bluish purple in color. It is incredibly delicious and considered by some to be the most nutritious berry in the world. It contains unique polyphenols, anthocyanins, and omega-3 ALA’s. Each wild-picked berry has a slightly different taste, which makes eating each one a delicious surprise.
Muscadine Grape: Vitis rotundifolia, or the muscadine grape, is a variety native to the Southeastern US. It tolerates more heat than other varieties and is incredibly high in polyphenols and resveratrol, which is a compound linked to the French Paradox and heart health. Wines made from the muscadine grape are antioxidant-rich, but muscadine grape seed extracts are even higher in resveratrol and can be found in many resveratrol supplements.
Look out for these three new superfoods as you plan your summer superdiets. They are unmatched in nutrition and taste and a fun and exotic addition to the everyday.

Hey all you SuperFoodies! I’m here live from Anaheim at the IFT 2009 Food Expo. Sunday passed beautifully as I roamed the expo floor scouting out the newest and best in superfood innovations! Highlights of the day included meeting Dr. Steven Pratt, author of SuperfoodsRx, Superfoods Healthstyle, and his new book SuperHealth (of which yours truly received a signed copy yesterday!) The extremely friendly Dr. Pratt, who in fact appears to be reversing in age, was signing books and greeting all the foodies at the IFT Expo.
I sampled tons of new products (health beauty drinks, dried superfruits, sports and energy drinks, granola bars, and even fiber ice cream) and was impressed with the majority of what I tasted. This expo is the international convergence of science, industry, and consumer products, and we’re here to pass it along to you. The ideas flowing at IFT absolutely cement the idea that HEALTH CAN NOW BE DELICIOUS AND FUN! I look forward to roaming around today to check out more. In fact, I’m hungry, so off I go! Stay tuned…
